10 weeks on

Technically the last day of internship was just like any other. Just a few special treats here and there. Had buffet lunch with my mentor at amara, where I bumped into an old, old friend- pleasant surprise indeed! Managed to bid goodbye personally to kenny, bee siew and katherina, who always seem to have the most emphatic and nicest comments to make. And of course, some quality time with my favourite people in office, eug and liz!

A shared experience becomes a language, one that only the participants themselves speak. The 'sisterhood' built over countless coffee breaks, bitch fits, gchats :)

all in a day's work

Haha second-last time I'd be doing this! Modules that I got for quite a steal, that will hopefully only take up half of my time over 13 weeks, that are gona kickstart the final year:
EC4102 Macroeconomics III
EC4341 International Economics II
EC4361 Labour Economics II

Sidenote 1: I'm inevitably caught between being graciously happy and allowing self-centred/ self-indulgent thoughts to creep into my mind.

Sidenote 2: Everyone learns the most from mistakes. Consider yourself lucky you've somebody with you who knows exactly what you're going through. Please don't let the guilt ruin you.

Sidenote 3: Come back to me in one piece.

random

I came to a conclusion just now on the way to work.

If I see a senior citizen pushing and jostling her way through the crowd at the mrt doors, I would NOT give up my seat to her when she enters the carriage. Since she has so much energy to push people around, I should assume she can afford to simply stand on her feet.

Hah.

ending.

Eugene's random message last night said it all: last week of internship!

Lunch with stan today gave me another opportunity to sum up my thoughts about the past 10 weeks. The company, the people, the work, the controversies, the fun, the biatching, the training.. I know I've plenty to look back upon even after everything is over. It makes me smile to recall timmy's reminder - from KL nonetheless - to "savour every moment" of my final week. I have no complaints.

Ah yes, bidding is under way again, and I'm just hoping things would go according to plan: three level4 mods next semester, one level4 mod + thesis the following semester. At this point I must say I'm super thankful to have been able to share so much about school and economics with Liz. Sometimes we tend to lose sight of what we're working towards, and we need to find that sense of purpose again. I'm falling in love again with what I do best. And some people just don't get it.

there's a first time for everything

Fairytale ending for the slow starter in the competition :) I'm glad I caught all the action! Totally worth staying up for.

this woman's work

Another of those songs that could withstand the test of time.
-
Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside

This woman's work,
This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

emptiness.

Sometimes I just wana be formless, shapeless, weightless, lifeless.

guide.

This post was inspired by somewhat converging experiences of various people around me.

I don't like it when some try to impose their opinions on others. Things get tricky when people of higher authority do it. I think it's awful when they tell you you'd get "nothing" out of Career A, and they know it cos they've spent 948571613682 years in that industry, and that there's "no value" in it unlike the industry you are in right now. You respect them for what they've accomplished, and you know where they are coming from, but.. wtf. Firstly, who gets "nothing" out of anywhere? Even if it was ever true, you've all the right to find out for yourself. Besides, when you already have thought about and decided which direction you wana take in the next 3-5 years, and you've more than valid reasons for it, how can anyone simply shoot it down and say you'd just be "wasting" your time? I'm really appalled by how judgmental some people can be.

Another issue is, if you do end up taking a route different from what your mentor/boss has guided you towards, it shouldn't make you feel like you've disappointed them, or let them down, or wasted their effort. You don't live your life for them. Yes, they deserve all the gratitude in the world, and if they're truly wise and open-minded, they'd wish you all the best and hope that you'd be happy.

Go forth.
