guide.
This post was inspired by somewhat converging experiences of various people around me.I don't like it when some try to impose their opinions on others. Things get tricky when people of higher authority do it. I think it's awful when they tell you you'd get "nothing" out of Career A, and they know it cos they've spent 948571613682 years in that industry, and that there's "no value" in it unlike the industry you are in right now. You respect them for what they've accomplished, and you know where they are coming from, but.. wtf. Firstly, who gets "nothing" out of anywhere? Even if it was ever true, you've all the right to find out for yourself. Besides, when you already have thought about and decided which direction you wana take in the next 3-5 years, and you've more than valid reasons for it, how can anyone simply shoot it down and say you'd just be "wasting" your time? I'm really appalled by how judgmental some people can be.
Another issue is, if you do end up taking a route different from what your mentor/boss has guided you towards, it shouldn't make you feel like you've disappointed them, or let them down, or wasted their effort. You don't live your life for them. Yes, they deserve all the gratitude in the world, and if they're truly wise and open-minded, they'd wish you all the best and hope that you'd be happy.
Go forth.
